Protecting Yourself

Protecting oneself is first and foremost on every good survivalist's mind. If we cannot protect ourselves, how can we protect our loved ones? Each and every one of us needs a plan. Are we where we want to be to be able to protect ourselves and our loved ones? Do we have the equipment and supplies for a long holdout? Are we physically and mentally prepared for a war with a bunch of rioting no-goods? How about if a rogue government comes to get your guns or to take you away? These and many other things are all things that must be considered. You also need to be able to take care of wounds and illnesses in a long drawn out event. Do you know what natural items can be substituted for prescription drugs and that can be used medically in other ways?

First, let's talk about your location and what should be done. First of all it should be out in the country if at all possible. This will make it easier than if you are located in a city. Wherever you are located, you need to do some things to make your home more safe. Have a perimeter around your home that will allow you to see anyone trying to sneak in on you. In the country that means open space of twenty to fifty yards on all four sides of your house. In the city you should not have any blind spots on your entire lot. Trees should be far enough apart that you can see anyone trying to get from one to another without being seen. City or country, you do not want shrubs next to the house that can be used to hide in. In the city especially, but even in the country, you should be able to lock all of your windows and doors. While this will not keep someone from getting in if they really want to, they will probably have to make enough noise that it will alert you if they try to enter.

I suggest that you keep loaded weapons in your home. If you have children that you are not sure are old enough to know what is going on and that might experiment with weapons, make sure the loaded weapons are not available for them to get at. We do not want any accidents to happen. Only you know what type of weapons you should have on hand. For inside the home I recommend a shotgun loaded with about number 2 or number 4 shot. This will give you a big enough pattern and yet is large enough shot to do what you need it to. If there is no way you can keep a shotgun around at the ready, a handgun is the next choice. If you are worried about people coming on your property, you could also keep a rifle in the house. Either that or keep some slugs for your shotgun. If you keep a rifle in the house I would recommend that you have it in a place that is the most likely place it will be needed. One thing about any type of shotgun, rifle of semi auto handgun is do not keep a live round in the chamber. Nothing puts the fear of God into an intruder like the pumping of a shell into your shotgun, working the bolt or the slide on a semi auto on your rifle or racking the first bullet into your pistol. Just doing that you may not even have to shoot.

Again, as I have stated many times in the past, (see the archives) you need one to two years of food on hand and a good supply of ammo. You need to learn as much as possible about alternative medicine. Things like herbal medicine and alternative ways of staying healthy. I would not take too long with the learning of these things as I believe that things may come to a head before much longer. You also need to make a decision as to how you would handle a situation if it was your own government that came and tried to take your guns or even take you to a internment camp. Could you take aim at one of your own countrymen? Could you shoot one if you had to, to protect yourself and your family? These are not easy questions and most of us would have a hard time answering them. I still do not know for sure what I would do unless I knew that my life or the life of a loved one was in danger.

As I stated, I feel something is going to happen soon. I truly hope that I am wrong. I hope that this government comes to its senses and leaves us the freedoms that we are supposed have under our constitution. I like life just the way it is and could live out the rest of mine without having to protect myself. However, should push come to shove, I will protect myself and my loved ones and I expect that every true survivalist would do the same. However, I will never start anything, just finish it.
